The learning process is complex and particular in every individual, and some students find a way to shine and become A-student: those with good grades and outstanding results. Of course, to get to this position is not easy, nor free, it requires effort and hard work, and there lays a big part of the merit. But once you are there, you have the unique chance to help the ones that are seeking help to get to the top. There is controversy concerning if helping others is good for A-students, and there are good arguments on both sides that are worth to discuss.
Are there students seeking help?
Some assignments can be challenging, and papers like a dissertation, essay, or research regarding a topic you don’t know much about are especially complex. So, if you are seeking help to write a dissertation or a similar paper, you can look for a professional dissertation writing service. This kind of writing service can relief your charge of work, and let you concentrate in other assignments.
On the other hand, those that need to write a dissertation and aren’t interested in writing service can find very helpful the guidance from a fellow student. Some schools and institutes have programs where A-students volunteer to help other students. And there are even more choices because you can go online and find sites whit forums where you can ask questions and get a variety of answers, from both teachers and students.
Can students help each other?
The idea of students helping each other is not a new concept, it has been practiced lots of times through history and can actually be traced to Aristotle, who promoted that his best students -A-students- help the others. There have been several techniques that use mutual help in students applied successfully, and that were developed with the aid that an A-student can give by assisting another student that hasn’t reached his or her level of comprehension.
One of the applications is very similar to what Aristotle did, its called Peer Teaching, and consists in a system where some students become leaders and guides for the rest of the group. Another popular technique is Cooperative Learning, that focus on the fact that many times a student can understand better than the teacher the conflicts that other students may have, so they can empathize better and explain using a different perspective.
But all those applications were on a small scale, and there hasn’t been a general agreement about the position of educational systems regarding mutual help in students. Still, there is a big percentage of students that need help in different types of assignments, like writing a dissertation, resolving calculations or doing an analysis of content, and the secret to helping them can be in the A-student of his class.
A-students helping fellow students: ¿win-win situation?
The answer to that question in one word is: absolutely. In one hand, it´s obvious that the student receiving the help benefits from it, mainly by clearing doubts and dissolving conflicts. But it has been showed that it also improves the learning process for the A-student that helps the others by explaining a topic, guiding in homework, or giving a dissertation service.
Here are some of those benefits:
- Promotes healthy interaction between the students
- Explaining exercise and reinforce the knowledge that the A-student has
- The student receiving the help gets an individualized explanation
- Some students feel less intimidated by a peer than by a teacher
- It normalizes seeking help when needed for the students, which is a healthy habit
- It strengthens the abilities as a leader of the A-student explaining
- An A-student probably will empathize better with another student
Are there any disadvantages?
There is no perfect process, and every technique has flows that in some way, affect the results. So, any system where an A-student helps a fellow student has its risks. There aren’t that many disadvantages, but they still represent obstacles that you can’t let out of your sight, in order to prevent them.
Here are some of the disadvantages that you should keep in mind:
- A-students can get distracted from their own assignments
- Sometimes it’s hard to get a healthy interaction between students
- Some students feel that is a shame to be seeking help from fellow students
- It’s possible that an A-student doesn’t have the right tool to explain a topic
- The students receiving the help might not take it seriously
- Some A-students may be shy and find hard to fit in the role of a leader
These aspects are situations that can seriously affect the learning process, for both the A-student and the student receiving help. But still, all these disadvantages can be managed, by creating a good working environment and giving the instructions that guaranty an effective process. If the conditions are adequate, and the students have the right disposition, there is no reason for mutual learning to fail.
