My son loves his video games. Now, when I was his age, I loved Space Invaders, Pac-Man, and Donkey Kong. I spent many a quarter and many an hour at the video arcade in my local mall.
Today’s youth have it far easier. From the comfort of their own home, and in front of the TV screen while sitting on the family room couch, my son and his friends can play today’s video games, with far better graphics and far better effects than I ever dreamed of, oh so many years ago!
Recently, a friend of mine told me his teenager was considering the field of video game design, and getting a four year degree in a field in that area. I wasn’t even aware that colleges offered such degrees. My own son quickly pointed out the errors in my thinking, even informing me that video game design is multi-billion dollar industry. In fact, in 2015, it was a 23.5 billion dollar industry. Many experts predict that the industry is only going to grow. As more games are being created, and as technology continues to become a major part of our lives, more and more video game designers will be needed. Indeed, salaries for video game designers are also sure to increase, as well. Many of today’s video game designers can expect an average of $60,000.00 a year.
Today’s colleges and universities offer several degrees in video game design. Some of these may include degrees in Game Design, Game Art, Computer Animation, Computer Science, and Multiplatform Software Development, to name a few. Furthermore, as is the case with many of today’s modern universities, students can get degrees both in a formal on-campus setting, as well as at home with on-line degrees. Today’s students have a number of colleges to choose from, as well.
Who knew that today’s equivalent to Space Invaders would be such an in-demand product? Who knew that creating the latest video game could have such an in-demand career?
