Now, the organization is taking another step toward inclusivity by allowing girls into its ranks. The change, which will go into effect next February, means future members will be part of the newly named Scouts BSA. Michael Surbaugh, chief Scout executive of the Boy Scouts of America, said in a statement, “As we enter a new era for our organization, it is important that all youth can see themselves in Scouting in every way possible.” Cub scouts are already enrolling boys and girls, with 3,000 girls signing on to participate in the junior version of Scouts BSA. Not everyone is thrilled with the new developments, though: In addition to those who want to keep genders separated, the Girl Scouts of America is also peeved. As The New York Times points out, “The Boy Scouts of America may … be hoping to buoy its slumping membership,” which is a fraction of what it used to be. The Girl Scouts of America offers many of the same programs and has emphasized activities for girls interested in science, technology, engineering, and math. In reaction to the recent news, Social gives “Boy Scouts” 54 percent positives over the past day. –Alex Shultz
