Coal burning, which remains the primary source of electricity in the world, is also believed by many to be one of the top contributors to climate change. It’s little wonder that methods like gasification and carbon capture have been developed to offset coal pollution, but scientists generally agree that the term “clean coal” is a red herring at best — and a dangerous oxymoron at worst. Social certainly doesn’t buy the hype. Clean coal has been trending at 68 percent negative sentiments this past month, and President Donald Trump’s advocacy of the fossil fuel certainly doesn’t help. Trump sent a team of advisers and energy execs to a UN conference on climate change on Monday, where they were booed and jeered for pushing clean coal. –Hugo Guzman
