As politicians and journalists continue sifting through the details of the tax bill passed by Senate Republicans late on Friday night, one of the newest tidbits to emerge is the potential opening up of Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) for oil drilling. Currently, the entire area—which is rife with wildlife—is off limits to oil and gas companies. HuffPo pointed out that by the Republican Senate’s own estimates, drilling in the ANWR would produce $1.1 billion in tax revenues over 10 years. That’s “roughly 0.075 percent of the debt expected to be generated by the tax bill.” If the drilling is included in the final tax bill, it’s likely to face heavy opposition and lawsuits from conservation groups. “Opening the Arctic to drilling as part of this tax plan is simply shameful. The Arctic Refuge isn’t a bank—drilling there won’t pay for the tax cuts the Senate just passed,” National Audubon Society President and CEO David Yarnold said the day after the Senate vote. His viewpoint is shared by the majority of Social, which also would prefer to keep the landscape as is. Over the last 90 days, “Arctic Refuge + Drilling” has a 31 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz

“Here’s the thing about The Good Men Project. We are trying to create big, sweeping, societal changes—–overturn stereotypes, eliminate racism, sexism, homophobia, be a positive force for good for things like education reform and the environment. And we’re also giving individuals the tools they need to make individual change—-with their own relationships, with the way they parent, with their ability to be more conscious, more mindful, and more insightful. For some people, that could get overwhelming. But for those of us here at The Good Men Project, it is not overwhelming. It is simply something we do—–every day. We do it with teamwork, with compassion, with an understanding of systems and how they work, and with shared insights from a diversity of viewpoints.” —– Lisa Hickey, Publisher of The Good Men Project and CEO of Good Men Media Inc.
