If you’re on the hunt for a bit of inchoate rage to kick off your weekend, look no further. The following Vine captures the nauseating moment a Christian protestor heckles a man for grieving over his dead husband.
As Gay Star News reports, the incident took place in Alabama. While Chief Justice Roy Moore spoke to a ravenous crowd about being suspended for defying the Supreme Court’s same-sex marriage ruling, an alternate press conference (held by the Human Rights Campaign) took place a few hundred feet away.
Speaking amid a crowd proudly brandishing signs that read “Homosexuality Destroys Families,” Dr. Paul Hard related his ongoing legal battle for his husband, who died five years ago, to be legally recognized as such.
The moment he starts discussing his partner’s death, a man in the crowd bursts into guffaws, crowing, “You can’t have a husband.”
John Archibald, a columnist for AL who attended the conference, wrote the following editorial about the incident:
How can any man, no matter his position on Roy Moore or any issue, stand before another and mock his pain? How can one stand under the banner of God and laugh at another man’s death? How — in the name of God — can one deride genuine grief? Christians cannot let these people define their religion. All they have is volume. As a substitute for moral authority.”
