Now that the Summer is drawing to an end, it’s time to think about Fall. It’s time to rummage through your closet to see what fits and what needs replacing. More importantly, it’s time to transition from the warmer days of summer to the cooler days of Fall. Here are 6 key areas of focus.
Outerwear
Fall mornings are generally very cool and the afternoons much warmer, so it’s important to have a jacket that keeps you warm on those cooler mornings. A very light jacket will do the trick, usually, one that you’d use for Spring. However, Spring jackets are generally more vibrant/ lighter in colour, but the weight is ideal. So look for a Spring weight jacket, like a mackintosh in muted colours, which would be a great transitional item. A mackintosh with a detachable lining is the ideal transitional coat. Take out the lining for the early part of Fall and reattach it around mid-season as the weather turns. Then retire it as the weather really cools down, as you transition to an early winter coat.
Sweaters, cardigans, and vests
Layering is a great way to wear appropriate clothing for the season. Applying layers such as sweaters, cardigans, vests or gilets will help regulate your body temperature. Adding a sweater under your jacket for additional warmth in the morning and removing it in the afternoon as the temperature warms is an option. Alternatively, wearing a light gilet under your jacket, which has the same effect as a sweater will also help to insulate from the cooler mornings and later, colder evenings as you leave work. Later into the season, wear a down-filled vest over your jacket instead of the gilet, for more warmth.
Footwear
Fall is the season that takes you from shoes to boots. It’s a good idea to invest in a few pairs of boots, such as a Chelsea, Chukka or Desert boot, that you can wear to work with dress pants. Wear boots that have rubber soles, which will help you during the rainy days, whereas leather soles will just absorb water and stay damp. Suede shoes are a great look for Fall, just remember to spray them with a water protector so they repel the rain.
Suits/ Sports jackets
As the weather cools, you will need to transition out of your cottons, silks, and linen into heavier more substantial fabrics. Fabrics like tweeds, corduroy, cashmere, moleskin, and heavier wools. These fabrics will both keep you warm and dry.
Pants
Your pants will need to be made of seasonal fabrics, similar to that of your sports jackets. Look for flannels, worsted wools, heavier cotton corduroys and tweeds to keep you warm. Grey flannel is the perfect complement for most any sports jacket you might own.
Accessories
Towards the end of Fall is when we have to consider wearing hats, gloves. Wool gloves will probably be good enough as the weather turns and later leather gloves with a cashmere or wool lining for added warmth as the season progresses.
By focusing on these key areas you’ll stay warm and dry as the season transitions.
