Feeling stressed before a big move? You wouldn’t be alone. A new survey shows that moving house is one of the most stressful things you can experience in life.
The survey, conducted by marketing research company OnePoll, asked 1,000 people about stressful situations. It found that 64 percent of respondents ranked moving as the most stressful things they’ve ever done, beating out other nail-biting experiences such as divorce, having children, and starting a new job.
So, what makes moving so stressful? Well, it’s not just one thing that does it, but several.
- Changes: Saying goodbye is hard — even if it’s just to an apartment or townhouse. It’s even more challenging when you’re relocating to a new city, switching careers, and leaving behind friends.
- Pressure: You can’t hit the pause button on life. Whether you’re organizing an inner-city move or a move across the country, you still have to juggle all your other responsibilities on top of arranging your relocation.
- Finances: Moving can be a big thorn in your side when it comes to finances; it’s always more expensive than you think. Depending on how far you need to travel, it could cost thousands of dollars. If your need to relocate comes out of the blue, you may not have the savings prepared.
- Labour: Somebody has to pack, pick up all those boxes, and lug heavy furniture out of your old place and into the new one. And don’t forget about arranging a truck and driving it around town!
How to Take the Stress out of Your Move
Planning a move takes a lot of your concentration, and you won’t be able to give it your all if you’re high-strung and stressed out. Here are some ways you can manage your anxieties so that you can focus on the job at hand.
1. Hire Movers
No matter how big or small your move might be, you don’t have to do it on your own. A professional moving company can help you at every step of the process.
When looking for a local moving company, you want to find one with plenty of experience, like the moving experts from Metropolitan Movers. With over ten years in the business and more than 50,000 successful moves under their belt, they have the knowledge and expertise to pull off a seamless move. Teaming up with a company with similar stats will ensure your belongings are in good hands.
2. Start Early
While the physical relocation of all your stuff from one place to another may only take hours, there’s a long lead up to your move. Take advantage of this time by starting to pack, de-clutter, and clean long before the big day.
You can tamp down black feelings of anxiety by organizing your move as early as possible. Break down the chaos of this huge task into smaller steps. This technique, called micro-productivity, divides your big move into manageable, actionable tasks so that it’s less intimidating.
3. Stay Positive
Perspective is everything. If you approach this task with the belief that it’s going to be hard or that everything will go wrong, you’ll find ways to prove yourself right.
However, if you take things as they come while trying to stay optimistic, you may find it easier to put your nose to the grindstone and get through it.
Moving might be stressful, but it doesn’t have to take over your life. Take control of your anxiety by following these tips!
