Sleeping on your back with support under knees
Perhaps the best position to sleep for a healthy back is by lying straight on your back. This position distributes the weight thoroughly and minimizes the pressure points. Moreover, you can enhance the support by placing a pillow under your knees.
Start by lying flat on your back with your face towards the ceiling. Don’t twist your head sideways. Place a pillow under your head and neck for appropriate support. Then, use a small pillow and put it beneath your knees. If required, you can also add a small pillow to support your lower back.
Sleeping on the side with a pillow between your knees
Perhaps the most popular position for sleeping is lying on the side. It is a comfortable posture but what you may not notice is the strain on the lower back as it pulls your spine out of position. However, there is an easy way to fix this issue. You can put a firm pillow between your knees to raise the upper leg. It helps in restoring the natural alignment of your body like the hips, pelvis, and spine all come to their appropriate positions.
So, lay in your bed on one side and position the pillow under your head for support. Then, pull up your knees a bit and place a pillow between the knees for decent support. If there is any gap between your body and mattress, particularly around your waist, fill it with a small pillow.
Fetal position
It is perhaps the best way to sleep for individuals that suffer from a herniated disc. The curled up position bring some relief as the knees tucked into your chest will prevent your spine from bending.
To adopt this sleeping position, lay in your bed and roll to one side. Then put a pillow under your neck and head to provide the necessary support for your body. Now, slowly lift your knees and draw them towards your chest. Do this until your back becomes relatively straight.
