Being a person in today’s world comes with a lot of responsibility. We have our families, careers, passions, things we enjoy, and other things that we don’t. Being a human being is complicated in general, but, when it comes to life, there are five skills every man should know.
#1 Change A Tire
Sure, you can call your roadside service to do this for you but changing your own tire while is not only a good workout it will supply you with a sense of accomplishment, which never hurts. Even if you are the kind of guy who doesn’t like to get his hands dirty, it’s important to know this one skill if you ever find yourself in a jam.
Let the mechanics worry about putting on the right carburetor but don’t be caught not knowing what to do. I once put a tire on my car while my date waited in the car. It was raining, which brings us to our next skill.
#2 Chivalry
At one time this word meant that a man showed a woman graciousness at all times. Today, this means to treat everyone with respect. Doors do not need to be opened exclusively for women and I know women who open doors for men. Chivalry is a state of mind and you can achieve it easily by adopting a few simple mindsets.
First, be kind to everyone even when they aren’t kind to you. Don’t forget to be kind to yourself as well. This may require restraint at times but you can achieve it with a little practice. Lastly, treat others as you would want to be treated. It doesn’t get much simpler than that.
#3 Patience
While patience is a virtue it is also a skill that must be constantly practiced. I am not sure pure patience can be learned by those who have none. I know that I have to work on mine all the time. Patience is a practice for some and that’s okay. Nothing worthwhile comes easy and believe me, patience is worth the time put in.
If you are a naturally impatient man I am here to say that you too can achieve this blissful state. All you need to do is take a deep breath and count to ten when you feel your blood start to rise. I would also suggest researching meditation. Patience will set you apart from the rest.
#4 Emotional Health
Here is another skill that is something we all have to work on. Women do too. Emotional health can also be achieved, just like patience. But the road to reach it is not the same for everyone. Each of us grows up with our own experiences that shape who we are and how we react to them. The reactions we have are the result of our emotional health.
If you have a tendency to be sad a lot or get angry and don’t know how to deal with this it may be time to ask for help. While some men may have issues asking for help, being able to do this is part of achieving emotional health.
#5 A Stellar Work Ethic
No matter where you come from or how you were raised there is no denying that men with a good work ethic are always going to obtain their goals. This is because they are willing to do anything to make what they want a reality when it comes to their career. If you want to earn a partnership in a top law firm you have to be willing to do the dirty work.
Take it from a man who made his dreams come true. Stephen King said, “Talent is cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work.” A man with a good work ethic is willing to take those coffee orders while interning if it means climbing the ladder.
As you begin your practice to achieve these five skills you will see how the positive work you put into yourself will begin to pay off.
