Stephen G. Bloom, the Bessie Dutton Murray Professor of Journalism at the University of Iowa, is the author of Postviile: A Clash of Cultures in Heartland America, Inside the Writer's MInd, The Oxford Project (with Peter Feldstein), and Tears of Mermaids: The Secret Story of Pearls. For more than 20 years, he was an award-winning reporter for The Los Angeles Times, Dallas Morning News, San Jose Mercury News, and Sacramento Bee. His work has appeared in many publications, including the London Guardian, New York Times, Washington Post, Salon, Smithsonian, Russian Esquire, and the Annals of Clinical Psychiatry. Good Me Project, this is the first article I’ve read on your site. I’m scratching my head wondering how some guys story about messing around with girls as a teenager is supposed to inspire me to be a better man. If your goal as stated on your about page is to bring out the best in men, tell me how you are doing that here. Tell me how messing around with girls and detailing every movement is trying to be a good man.

Stephen what a wonderfully descriptive piece, both of childhood sexual encounter and of Miami Beach back in the day (I have spent a lot of time there in the last decade so it’s nice to know what it was like then). Unfortunately my early and even late teenage years where far less interesting from a exploration perspective than yours. It took until my sophomore year of college before I broke the loser spell and had anything near a girlfriend.
