With changes in wage equality, technology, and social support, the barriers to achieving stay-at-home dad status are finally crumbling.

Going back centuries the role of the father remained as a disciplinarian and breadwinner for his family. He was intimidating and no one to toy with. Today, more men are looking to fulfill a more rewarding role at home and take on the children full time as a stay at home dad.
This is not just a temporary state or fad, men who grew up in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s want involvement.

As the job market continues to be unstable many spouses are making the decision and opting to switch roles. Women who have careers are now earning a better salary thanks to movements towards equality. Each day they part with their children to bring home the big paycheck and turn over getting clothes for kids, feeding and other daily tasks to their spouse.
This is not just a temporary state or fad, men who grew up in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s want involvement. They remember the lack of connection to their own father and want an active and nurturing role. They want to be close to their children. For kids, it’s a chance to develop a lasting relationship.

Equality in wages is on the rise. More businesses are taking a stand and recognizing individuals for their skills rather than their gender. This puts families in a unique position of deciding which one remains home.
A father’s involvement and presence can add much to the home. For one, he’s a natural delegator. This is useful with a house full of children. Men, known for their skills at getting things done will help to establish daily routines. This can include having children pick out outfits and dress themselves, put away their toys after playing and more. Women are multi-taskers, no doubt, but moms often give in where a dad wants results. Men are also very competitive which can help children to develop confidence. A father that gets involved with their children in sports and other activities leads to a stronger bond that continues to grow into adulthood.
Now that men are opening up and exposing themselves they are gaining support and appeal in their new role.

This changing role of the father also benefits the married couple. Women have waited a long time to enjoy seeing a father help with homework, chores, school functions and more. It gives the couple things to discuss. A mother wants to know that her babies are all right. It’s always been hard for her to drop off children at a day care or at a babysitter’s home. Plus a woman who goes to school and also has a career doesn’t want it to begin at the age of 40. With a father home taking care of the children, the mother can assume her role as an executive by day and resume as the mom in the evening.
Advancements in technology have also helped to make the switch acceptable. Online sites such as Facebook and Twitter are as common to men as they are women. Now that men are opening up and exposing themselves they are gaining support and appeal in their new role.
Many of the stay at home dads also work from home and juggle working, children’s sporting events, plays and picking children up from school. It’s a transformation they do not plan to give up anytime soon. With this situation, they feel a sense of worth and fulfillment. They are not only earning money but they are also playing a vital role in their children’s lives.

Yeah, Tom Brechlin and progressive/liberals are shame into silence when it comes to issues like healthcare, the minimum wage, better labor rights, time off for sick/vacation time, etc. It is the conservative way or the highway.
Yup, minimum wage, yeah, that’s the ticket, not jobs. Labor rights? I didn’t know liberals had the corner on that but you’re kind of on the right track, we simply eliminate labor jobs. Talk to the Mexicans that will do really well with the Ford plant when they move from Michigan. Talk to the coal mine workers when they’re sitting at home jobless. But that’s okay because the plan is to take more from me to provide for them…. that’s cool.
Well, you need to blame the CEOs for taking the jobs to Mexico and overseas, and you can blame the conservatives for that. Well, we need to re-train the coal miners for the solar and wind power jobs; however, you have the coal mining, oil, and electric industries that have done everything they can to prevent those industries from flourishing. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-koch-brothers-dirty-war-on-solar-power-20160211
Maybe it is about time we have a basic guaranteed minimum income in this country, then people don’t have to worry about being unemployed or being underpaid.
Talk to the Mexicans that will do really well with the Ford plant when they move from Michigan. Talk to the coal mine workers when they’re sitting at home jobless. But that’s okay because the plan is to take more from me to provide for – Mr. Brechlin, the Mexican workers have not done very well at all ever since NATFA was signed off. You know it, and I know it. You think that the coal mining companies give a care about the workers? They have mostly replaced the workers with giant machines and have left places like West Virginia… Read more »
DJ,

“…the barriers to achieving stay at home dad status…”
Men don’t want to be stay at home dads. This is a dumb article.
ZD, I’m sure some thought that your comment may have been out of line but there is more truth to it then some would think. I will never ever put down stay at home dads and I will 100% support them BUT we have to be honest here. Truth is that some of the stay at home dads are such by default and not by choice. Which is completely different from what we saw with women during the rise of feminist movement. In some ways it’s been to the benefit of men because we can concretely see that men are… Read more »
Many men stay at home because they got tired of the rat race or they can’t find jobs that were comparable to their last ones since those jobs were send overseas or given to an imported foreign worker.
Problem is that they are not getting the support that is needed, they are being further diminished. Father’s be they stay at home or otherwise are still exiled from the home in 85% of divorce cases. They sill have no choice, no effective birth control, no power in the family. They can be replaced at a moment’s notice. The wage gap has not closed, it has reversed, and the data is conclusive. They are failing across every major category, down to almost 30% of our enrollment, even worse in the category of graduation. Our girls today are out earning our… Read more »
DJ, you said “… we’ll never understand that until we stop speaking for them and start listening to them..” You said a mouth full here. I hate to say it but a lot of it is the so called “bleeding heart do gooders” that want to force what they perceive as a need rather then what men are saying. As popular as GMP is, it’s nowhere near representative of the majority of men. I’ve recommended the site to many men who have been totally turned off by it. There are a lot of “point of views” that lean toward the… Read more »
Yeah, Mr. Brechlin, and a lot of us have been told by hard core conservatives that it is their way or the highway and many liberals, progressives, and socialists have been shamed into silence by bleeding heart (actually no heart) conservative people who want to force their values down our throats.
