100 Words on Love by William Henderson
A lover’s game we used to play.
If you could choose the way you die, what would you choose?
Not by water and not by fire.
I said the same thing each time he’d ask.
You’d know what was happening, and you wouldn’t be able to stop it.
But it would be over and then it would be done.
I think I’d want something slow and drawn out.
I’d stop here. So would he. We’d talk about something else.
Do you want your end to be heart-attack quick or cancer slow?
Each I love you—a goodbye in disguise.
