He wanted the perfect playlist for spring, so he started swiping.
—
I tend to be a prolific compiler of music playlists. Being that spring is here I thought it the opportune time to craft one for the season to come. But this time I had a bit of trouble finding songs that I thought were ‘springy.’ Capturing the ethos of a season can be a fluid undertaking that can’t effectively be reduced to 20 or so songs.
In an attempt to stretch my musical palate I took to Tinder. After a couple days of liberally swiping right I opened up my conversations with matches, “I’m just about to start compiling a spring music playlist, suggestions?”
About half of the metropolitan girls messaged replied; yielding an eclectic mix of suggestions. One girl immediately assumed I was some sly libertine who wasn’t to be trusted and messaged back, “Well it depends on what genres take part in your playlist. You can’t say all because a) then I’ll know you’re not really making one, and b) an all kinds playlist is just a library (monkey emoji).” I didn’t take too kindly to such a response and proceeded to educate her on the nuances of making a playlist, “I wouldn’t want to reduce the ethos of spring to a single genre so in fact the playlist may contain an eclectic mix of genres so long as it encapsulates spring. We seem to have different philosophies when it comes to creating playlists.” The conversation promptly ended after this exchange.
A part of me feels bad that I used these unwitting girls solely for their music suggestions. However another part of me has a hunch that their could be worse things to have used woman for.
Without further ado I present ‘Tinder Primavera,’ compiled with the help of Chloe, Candance, Katelyn, Tasya, Sarah, and Sarah.
