On Friday, the White House announced a new set of guidelines for Title X, a federally funded program that subsidizes contraceptive services for low-income Americans. As part of the changes, any healthcare provider that wants to continue receiving federal funding will no longer be able to give abortion referrals and will have to be physically separate from spaces that offer abortions. That is a direct hit on Planned Parenthood, which serves roughly 40 percent of Title X recipients, according to multiple reports. Planned Parenthood already doesn’t receive federal funds for its abortion services, but conservatives who want to “defund” the organization believe it is secretly funneling money from contraceptive and women’s health programs back into abortions. Dawn Laguens, executive vice-president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, responded by saying: “This is an attempt to take away women’s basic rights, period. Under this rule, people will not get the health care they need. They won’t get birth control, cancer screenings, STD testing and treatment, or even general women’s health exams.” Planned Parenthood is considering legal action as Trump & Co. craft the final wording of the rule change.
