If you’re under 30, positive depictions of gay characters have always been part of the TV landscape. They’ve not always been embraced, and they were frequently dependent on stereotypes, but they were there, from teenagers to elder adults. Over time, the stereotypes have given way to more rounded, complex characters who look and act like the people next door.
But there were glimmers of hope decades ago, from portrayals of gay men who were not effeminate to allies in unexpected places. Matt Baume steps us through a few of them, and asks us for others we remember.
