Many of us find our work rather boring and when we do, we tend to blame ourselves. But there are very large-scale reasons, rooted in history and economics, why certain sorts of modern work are both more lucrative and rather more boring than they might have been in the past. Watch this School of Life video and then read our related writing prompts that follow.
You will spend 1/3 of your life at work; how do you find fulfillment? Where you get your fulfillment in life. Are you a generalist or a specialist? If you are a specialist, what other talents or desires did you forgo in order to become a specialist? How does that relate to your personal mission? Your values? If you were to allow yourself to be multiplicitous, what would that look like for you? What part of that can you arrange in your real life? Does your bucket list contain all that would be on your generalist’s list if you were not a specialist?
What is the relationship between 21st-century masculinity and being a specialist? Is the boring specialist’s routine part of the disposability of men?
The Good Men Project is different from most media companies. We are a “participatory media company”—which means we don’t just have content you read and share and comment on but it means we have multiple ways you can actively be a part of the conversation. As you become a deeper part of the conversation (Which really is “The Conversation No One Else is Having), you will learn all of the ways we support our Writer’s Community—community FB groups, weekly conference calls, classes in writing, editing platform building and How to Create Social Change.
