Ned Breslin shares what he’s learned about empowering local economies through 20 years of service in Africa.

Ned Breslin, CEO of Water for People and winner of the 2011 Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship, has lived in Africa for almost 20 years doing water and sanitation work. In this interview he talks about how to create business models that benefit the local community while providing much-needed water resources. He also talks about borrowing business techniques from wireless carriers like Verizon, who provide a service in exchange for a monthly fee.
Ned explains how they’ve set up systems where communities end up with “toilet franchises,” and touches on the importance of thinking like a business instead of a non-profit.
