But amid the doom and gloom in the lead-up to the 2018 Winter Games in PyeongChang is a noteworthy development: civil communications between North and South Korea, which is this year’s host. Leaders from the two sides met for more than 11 hours this week to discuss a range of issues, starting with allowing a North Korean delegation that includes two medal contender figure skaters to participate. South Korean officials were previously concerned about the possibility of North Korea setting off nuclear tests during the Games, which appears far less likely now that Pyongyang has been formally invited to participate. The two sides also agreed to reopen a military hotline that had been down for more than two years, though the North had no interest in discussing anything related to denuclearization. Whether the good feelings will remain in place is impossible to predict, but Social appreciates the initial effort. Over the last 3 days, “North Korea + Winter Olympics” has a 66 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz
