In this recent viral video, a father (or it could be a male caretaker or coach), supports a little girl to jump on top of a stool. She falls many times before she successfully jumps to the top of the stool and sticks the landing. The result: triumphant roars from both.
Fathers (as well as other male relatives and caretakers), how have you supported your daughters in going beyond stereotypes? Perhaps these are “un-ladylike” activities, ways of engaging that boys might typically, or girls seldom take part in. What kind of pushback have you experienced? How have you stopped your daughter from self-limiting herself? How have you responded to people who deem her activities dangerous for a girl?
Note: It turns out the video is of a famous boy gymnast. The original post on Facebook referred to him as a girl. This is particularly interesting as 1) it was assumed this was a girl because of the long hair 2) we wondered if someone would have even called attention to the video if they had known it was a boy 3) what gender assumptions do we make for boys, girls, non-binary kids?
