Efforts to Undermine the Special Counsel Backfire

The Times reported that Trump pushed for Mueller’s firing, but White House Counsel Don McGahn threatened to resign rather than carry out the order. After some convincing about how catastrophic the removal of Mueller would be, Trump apparently backed off, and McGahn stayed on board. But now, as Mueller gears up for an interview with Trump as part of his investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible obstruction of justice, more stories are suggesting that the President has attempted to undermine the probe. Foreign Policy dropped a piece on Friday saying that Trump “pressed senior aides last June to devise and carry out a campaign to discredit senior FBI officials after learning that those specific employees were likely to be witnesses against him.” It may be coincidental that sources have come forward in recent weeks to reveal such efforts. It’s also possible Trump’s own people are slowly leaking his shady behavior so it doesn’t come out all at once when Mueller releases his findings. Either way, what appears to be a drive to cut the legs off the Special Counsel is not going well. Over the last two days, “Trump + Mueller” has a 24 percent positive score on Social. –Alex Shultz
