A winter cold snap envelops most of the nation, a phenomenon spanning from the Rocky Mountains to the East Coast. Record low temperatures are blanketing the midwestern states with extreme lows as far south as the Mexican border.
Texas has taken this especially hard, having little experience dealing with extreme cold, days-long power outages, with limited snow-moving abilities, hampering relief efforts.
With Texas mayor Tim Boyd ranting “only the strong survive”, and the governor, Greg Abbott, initially blaming frozen wind turbines for the loss of power in the state saying: “This shows how the Green New Deal would be a deadly deal for the United States of America,” he said before claiming the “shutdown” of solar and wind energy “thrust Texas into a situation where it was lacking power,” Texans are left to fend for themselves.
What policy choices allowed this climate-based disaster to endanger six million lives putting them in the position to be without power, food, and a viable energy grid, while already grappling with the continuing threat of the coronavirus?
