As we’ve all seen in the news lately, the workplace affects more people’s mental health than most would like to admit.
Here are three recent examples.
Our government shutdown keeping hundreds of thousands of people wondering when or if they’ll ever go to work again and get paid.
Government employees like TSA agents who have to show up for work knowing they’re not getting paid, next pay period.
And finally, the senseless workplace shooting outside Chicago last week.
You might argue that the first two aren’t examples of mental health in the workplace. But I will argue that not knowing your work situation and having it get to the point where it affects things like rent, food, electricity, and other essential items is stressful, overwhelming and would push anyone into a state of depression and/or anxiety.
The same with TSA workers, only they still need to pay for transportation to and from work while they’re not receiving a paycheck. I can’t fathom having to deal with that and then trying to put a smile on my face as I deal with passengers.
With the workplace shooting last week, there has to be a reason Gary Martin brought a Smith & Wesson to work that day. Or any day, for that matter.
I fully believe that it would have to be some kind of severe mental illness or situation that caused him to use that gun to kill five people immediately after being fired.
The workplace can do strange things to us and that’s what we’ll be talking about on our weekly Mental Health & Wellness group call this Thursday, February 21 at 9 pm Eastern/6 pm Pacific.
The call information is below, so don’t forget to put it on your calendar and join us for this exciting hour.
