The President Trump hasn’t exactly moderated his tone since then, but he has clarified a bit. Rather than the current family-based immigration program, whereby immigrants have better chances of achieving residency if they have family in the States, Trump would like to see a merit-based system in place. Immigrants would be allowed entry based on education, work experience and expertise, along with a host of other factors. Such a system might be ideal in the minds of conservatives across the country, but it’s a different story online. On Social, users are bashing merit-based immigration, giving it only 29 percent support, while family-based immigration rides high at 42 percent positives. Whether a public outcry will stymie immigration reforms remains to be seen, but if changes do come to the current system, don’t expect Social to be spreading around happy-face emojis. –Hugo Guzman
