Thousands around the world are searching for refuge in light of being forced out of their homes by war, money and Mother Nature.

Displacement is most commonly associated with hunger and poverty. It’s a feeling that we ourselves may not be familiar with, but we know it exists in a very real way. By the same token, we often find ourselves doing what needs to be done to secure our tomorrow–so that we don’t end up hungry or on the streets.
That’s the most common scenario. However, what if we were one of the 232 million people living in country you weren’t born in, due solely to external forces out of your control—such as war, severe financial instability in your native homeland or even changes in climate? What if you were to suddenly become a refugee as a result of those forces?
According to a recent report from AJ+, many of the 232 million people who have been displaced don’t have to ask themselves those questions—because they’ve already shaped their reality. Even more disturbing, the number of those displaced, as well as refugees, is steadily on the rise, which could increase statistics in poverty, hunger and death.
This is not about numbers, nor how fortunate or unfortunate we think we are. This is about putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes and walking that mile—but if we insist on looking at this for the numbers, we must not forget that there’s a face behind each one.
