The Good Men Project

Finding the Truly Heroic Among Us Mere Mortals

mere mortals by Stephen Sheffield

A Good Men Project Premium Membership gives you tangible benefits — a book, an ad free experience, a chance to participate in exclusive conversations. But it also gives you a chance to expand the vision of the project as a whole.

On June 1, 2010, The Good Men Project opened its doors as an online magazine. Before that, it had been book, a film, a series of events, a simple blog. It was founded by Tom Matlack, together with his ex-venture capital partner James Houghton, had an idea where men of all kinds could tell their stories. In his first post for The Good Men Project, “It Begins” Tom tells the story this way:

James had in mind a simple little book. Unfortunately, where he is humble and understated (perhaps by virtue of having grown up in a famous family about which the press often got the story wrong), I am drawn to grandeur and a desire to find the truly heroic among us mere mortals. Where James was the spiritual leader who actually had the idea, I quickly became the used car salesman of the operation, pushing constantly forward in what quickly became a call to revolution, man style.

Men have certainly told their stories along the way — we have a collection of over 20,000 articles from almost 3,000 contributors since the project started. Lately, a steady stream of people who are just hearing about us for the first time say something to the effect of, “I heard about you and thought I’d check you out for five minutes — I ended up staying on your site for two hours.”
In the three and a half years since we’ve launched, we’ve seen the people who have been a part of this project go through weddings and births and deaths and divorces. We’ve seen men go off to war — some whom who return home and some who don’t. We’ve talked about some really difficult things to talk about — race and pornography and violence and abuse and marriage and ethical businesses and prison and sexuality.
And, as Tom so eloquently put it in that first post:
The men whom I have met during the Project have each inspired me to grow in a different way. They are my heroes. What we all need as men isn’t more silent suffering; it’s the willingness to tell and listen to the truth of our lives.

A copy of the original book, no ads when you sign in, and exclusive access to video hangouts and meetings. And your small monthly or yearly fee will help us continue to grow and expand our vision of including everyone in the conversation about what it means to be a man in the 21st century.
