The fantastic Franchesca Ramsey didn’t make this video in response to the heartbreaking results of the grand juries in Ferguson and NYC that failed to indict two white police officer who both took the lives of unarmed Black men, but the information contained in this video is useful right now for anyone who wants to be an ally during these hard times.
Ms. Ramsey makes five great points, but one that is probably most notable (and incredibly catchy, so tell your friends) is “Speak up, not over”. Take the opportunity to stand up and raise your voice to people in your life who are propagating racism. Use your voice to support, but never use your voice to speak over or drown out the voices of those in the group you’re trying to support.
And as Ramsey says, use your privilege and your voice to educate others … but don’t take credit for the work of others, or their words.
And listen to what she says about intent and impact, as well as apologies!
