The Young Turks break down Fox News’ “logic” on the welfare system.
____
Minimum wage increases have been spreading across the country as one way to help the working poor. One Fox News thinks instead of raising the minimum wage, welfare recipients shouldn’t be allowed to have kids. John Iadarola (Think Tank) and Jimmy Dore (The Jimmy Dore Show Podcast), hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
The solutions to the debates on social issues are obvious, if people would just think outside the box a little bit.
Want to increase funding for food stamps? Make it legal to buy guns with food stamps, and the right will get 100% behind the food stamps program.
Want to protect your rights as a gun owner? Define abortion as a Second Amendment and liberals will line up behind you.
Sorry, should say “as a Second Amendment right.”
But, I own stock in a company that runs prisons. If poor people stop having children, I stand to lose a lot of money. I can’t let that happen. I better block access to birth control and sex education as well, before it’s too late….
@ wellokaythen Look at it from a consent standpoint. We often say that women owe you nothing. They don’t owe you their time. They don’t owe you an answer, etc. Now if we look at things in more detail, we could argue that there is something they owe you like respect. So they shouldn’t curse you out, shame you, etc. We could look at taxation as a baseline. We have an obligation to society and it may not be an necessarily be an equal obligation, but the obligation shouldn’t be open ended. Even if society were to need more, they… Read more »
I wonder what was the economic upbringing these two guys were raised. They definitely don’t sound like they grew up in America’s ghettos and don’t understand the poverty stricken masses. Their comments at best sound like more shock and awe than having any substance. I’ve grew up in the ghetto and I’ve known generations of people who have been on public assistance and have no plans of getting off. The rewards are too great for them to consider otherwise. However, that is the issue. When you have a life style that becomes too comfortable why change? Trust me, if you… Read more »
One more thing. Did you catch the part where the Young Turks suggest that there may be psychological / emotional aspects to having children that don’t appear in a financial ledger? I wonder if they believe the same thing when discussing the “wage gap”.
They made a distinction between someone who already has children and is experiencing a temporary life set back and some one who is currently on welfare having children. I don’t see anything radical about the idea that if a person is unable to care for children emotionally, financially, whatever; they shouldn’t have children. Men already have no right to be parents in this society so why do people throw a fit when some one suggests that this should be extended to women?
There’s got to be some internal tension within conservatism on this issue. On the one hand, they’re saying that women on welfare shouldn’t have children, and on the other they say that being a mother is the greatest thing in the world.
It’s not clear which prejudice will win out – anti-welfare or pronatalism.
Here’s a conservative quandary – should a pregnant woman on welfare get an abortion in order to save the taxpayers some money?
@ wellokaythen I’m an ultra liberal (to the left of feminist / liberal / progressives) when it comes to reproductive rights. I believe that men (and women) should be able to attain a legal abortion. A man parental rights can’t be terminated without his consent without cause (he’d have to do something to warrant it), which I don’t feel will be an issue if women had the right to a legal abortion (Most women fraudulently facilitating adoptions probably do so out of fear of paying child support. Giving them the right to a legal abortion should eliminate this.) I think… Read more »
They aren’t even allowed to have the abortion after a certain time during the pregnancy (thinking 3 months) people need to stop having such emotional ties to that! We don’t need any more personality disordered people here with abandonment issues! We also don’t need any more welfare recipients! It’s cruel to bring people into a sick sad world! These idiotic moms should think about that!
Yes. Can’t afford them? Don’t have a stable home? Get rid of it! Give it up for adoption! Go to college after!
