Although there is broad bipartisan support for individual measures like stopping the mentally ill from buying guns, background checks for private sales and banning assault-style weapons, according to Pew Research Center there doesn’t appear to be any groundswell for significant changes to the status quo. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on Tuesday, “I think it’s premature to be discussing legislative solutions, if there are any.” Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut took a very different stance, remarking, “It’s time for Congress to get off its ass and do something.” (Murphy was a senator during the Sandy Hook tragedy in his state and called for gun control proposals then as well.) The term “gun control” remains as polarizing as ever: It had surpassed the 50 percent positive score mark on Social in the 30 days prior to Las Vegas but has since been jumbled with negative sentiment from people criticizing others who have called for thoughts and prayers, along with comments from those who say no to any modifications of what they deem an infringement on the Second Amendment. With all that in mind, “gun control” has a 62 percent negative score over the last day. –Alex Shultz
