Romans 13 reads: “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.” Sessions, and later White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, quoted the New Testament passage when questioned about why Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were separating undocumented children from their parents at the border with Mexico. The “zero tolerance” policy enacted by Sessions in April also promises to prosecute all illegal entries into the U.S. Organizations such as the National Association of Evangelicals, the Southern Baptist Convention to the National Council of Churches, and the U.S. Catholic Bishops have filed objections to the interpretation, and the United Methodist Church has even brought internal religious complaints against Sessions, who is Methodist. Those are just a few of the voices joining a growing chorus of condemnation of Sessions, President Trump, and other members of the Administration. Even the good book has taken a few hits among the laity, with Romans 13 receiving 75 percent negative sentiments on Twitter. –Hugo Guzman
