At least, that is what the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals opted for on Tuesday when a three-judge panel ruled that the Second Amendment guarantees the right to openly carry a gun in public for self-defense. The ruling came down after Hawaii twice denied plaintiff George Young an open-carry permit. “We do not take lightly the problem of gun violence,” Judge Diarmuid O’Scannlain wrote on Tuesday. “But, for better or for worse, the Second Amendment does protect a right to carry a firearm in public for self-defense.” Critics of the decision said it undermines Hawaii’s gun control laws, and social media users agree. Open carry gets 65 percent negative opinions online, with many calling the ruling a mistake. –Hugo Guzman
