Confused? Don’t worry. You’re not the only one. “Gaydar” doesn’t really work anymore. Hair, make-up, clothing, tattoos, the visible social signals of the past, if not erased, are seriously blurred, and stereotypes are disappearing. Straight women wear “guy clothes”, straight man dance and style their hair, lesbians wear skirts and lipstick, gay men watch the game because they’re #1 in their Fantasy Football League and just saw their QB get sacked…again. And that woman with that guy may be straight, single, and doing shots because she just landed her dream job.

The thing that seems to be missing here is a sense of the usefulness and effectiveness of probabilistic judgments. There is no necessary correlation between someone’s outward expressions of gender and their sexual orientation, just as there is no necessary correlation between one’s accent and appearance and one’s nationality. The only way to tell is to see them actually having sex with another person, and even then you can’t really leap to any conclusions.
