Writing is something that everyone should embrace in one way or another. Some people might argue that writing is only meant for writers, journalist, media people, scholars and those doing thesis or project managers. But this should not be the case. I appreciate the various doors that writing has opened for me since I started writing. I am not trained as a writer, but after years of practicing, I will agree that indeed writing is important.
Most children while growing up dream of big professional, like becoming a pilot, lawyer, medical doctor, an economist, a police officer and those notable professions. It is not easy to find a kid who wants to be a writer. This is because most of them think that writing cannot be a career and if it is, you will not benefit from it as you would if you were in the other types of professions. I am one of those kids who grew up believing that writing is not a cool thing to. But some kids have no idea of writing career.
For me, writing is as important as any other profession. People are making money out of their writing activities. Writing is an art that is therapeutic and can help you address a number of issues in your life. Personally, I used to write my daily activities in my diary. But as I grew into adulthood, this habit changed into writing things that happen in my life. I wrote about the hardships in life, love life, a little bit of politics and world issues and a bit of educational pieces here and there. My writing as a young adult is focused mainly on informing and engaging the youth on various things and to be better citizens.
I must admit that over the years, my writing has taken me to places I never thought I would ever visit. In fact, if I were not a writer I would never set foot in such places and platforms. For example in 2012, I got a rare opportunity to interview Mr. Michael A. Nutter, who was by then the mayor of Philadelphia and several African Ambassadors during the UNAAC (Uganda North America Association Convention). Since it was a closed door meeting, I was the only media personality allowed to cover the meeting.
In 2013, I appeared on a media access panel at the request of the Philadelphia program director at the James S. and John L. Knight Foundation, with numerous award-winning news personalities like Ms. Lorraine Ballard Morrill, the director of the news and community affairs at IHeartMedia as well as Mr. Neil Budde, the founding editor of Wall Street Journal Online. This was a lifetime opportunity that was made possible by my writing.
In 2014, I received the Lucien E. Blackwell Guiding Light in the Community Award after the judges suggested that my fearless journalism, especially in the face of opposition and controversy deserved recognition. Ms. Jannie Blackwell, the widow of Mr. Blackwell, gave the award to me at the Philadelphia City Hall. In the same year, I was able to interview several blockbuster stars like Ms. Ava Duvernay, the award-winning director of ‘Selma’ and Mr. Marlon Wayans. These are things I could not achieve if I focused on white collar jobs. Writing can take you to different parts of the world and can enable you to meet prominent people of the society.
Presidents, prime ministers, politicians, philanthropists, famous sports personalities and other outstanding members of the society require writers to tell their stories. The unprivileged people of the community also look for writers who can echo what they are facing and experiencing. A writer is basically a story teller. You look for stories to tell, put them in writing and put it out there for the rest of the people to read.
The great stories of this world are told by writers through their work. Future generations get to learn what happened and is happening now through written documents and journals. If you want to keep your memories alive, you need to write down your daily activities and things that are worth your memory. Writing enables you to learn and discover new things. Through my traveling as a writer, I have gone to remote places, slept in the cold and slept in lavish hotels without paying a cent for the accommodation. These are some of the many benefits of writing.
Through my writing, I have received accolades, threats and negative publicity from people who do not like my way opinions. Nonetheless, I have never been discouraged or stopped writing. I strongly believe that my writing will continue creating space, opening doors and taking me to different places in the world. I will continue writing as it is one of the best ways to tell my stories and what other people are going through.
