Ahhh money. It makes the world go round. We can never be too thin or too
rich right?
The fitness industry is much like any other – people promising the
world…if only you give them just a bit of that jingle. I’ll teach you
how to lose 20 pounds quick and easy, “just let me wet my beak.”
The truth is that getting and staying fit is a challenge. It requires work and dedication – not Benjamin’s and AMEX’s.

I surf around Facebook and what do I see? Not visions of sugarplums. I
see money hungry people ready to sell unproven gimmicks (and possibly
their soul) for a few more payments on that BMW M3.
Hope you enjoy that leather interior, cause it’s about to get hot after
you punch out for the last time on life’s old time clock.
Or maybe you don’t believe that – well in that case you may as well be
the ammo-toting solider that watches his buddy get slowly stabbed to
death in the movie Saving Private Ryan. No Honor.
Being a lying cheat is not good for humanity in this life or the next.
We are here to help our fellow humans face their adversities. It’s the
ultimate hero’s journey.
But what about those trainers that just don’t know they are promoting
false claims?
Sometimes I see things posted by trainers that are just outdated. A
recent video about EPOC comes to mind (EPOC is the calories you burn
after your workout – through recovery and such).
“You’ll burn a ton of calories post workout!” The marketing proclaims –
and you know what? The trainer promoting that claim might actually
believe it.

But guess what? You still don’t get a free pass Mr. Trainer, because you
should KNOW that only about 1 out of 4 studies showed any significant
increase in calories burned after an intense workout.
It’s your job bub.
Let me put this scientific study thing in perspective. Let’s say you are
in Norway (home of the troll legend) and you walk up to 4 random
strangers. You ask stranger number 1 if Trolls exist.
Stranger 1 says no. You ask stranger 2 if Trolls exist. Stranger 2 says
no. You ask a third stranger if Trolls exist, and he replies with no.
Finally, you ask a 4th stranger if Trolls exist and he says yes, he as
seen a Troll.
What do you end up believing? Do you believe that Trolls exist or that
they don’t? I’m going to bet a 1987, still in original packaging, neon-haired
peer reviewedTroll Doll that you are going to go with “no way!”
It’s the same with studies. If the majority of legitimate peer-reviewed
studies point in a certain direction – one would have to
be a fool to go with the minority.
Unfortunately, our money hungry trainer with that BMW M3 payment looming
often goes with the crazy Troll guy. They take 1 study and run with it
because it works well for their marketing agenda.
OK, now I want you to take that viewpoint and flip it totally the other
way. Give it a good old 180. Now you have the viewpoint of a good
trainer, a good researcher, and most of all – a good human being.
Two trustworthy people that I’ve been reading a lot of lately are Brad
Schoenfeld and Eric Helms. These are great people who put their honor
above their BMW payment.
At iScienceFit, we do the same. Our number 1 goal is to bring you
evidence-based training and nutrition programs. There are things more
important than sheer profits in this life, and our honor is one of them.
After all, when you live a life with honor, the money seems to come along
for the ride – whether that ride is a BMW or not.
