Right-wing politicians, pundits, and Fox News entertainers now march to the beat of identical mid-term elections talking points that represent those of us who oppose Trumpian words, actions, and politics as constituting a well-funded extremist, angry, and violent liberal-progressive-left wing-democratic socialist mob that is attempting to topple the foundational pillars of our government simply because we did not win the last presidential election and failed in our attempts to defeat the Kavanaugh nomination.
From Trump to McConnell, Graham, Grassley, and Ryan, from Hannity, Pirro, and Carlson, to Ingraham and Fox & Friends, they have raised the clarion call inciting fear and resentment against anyone who speaks up, anyone who resists the seating of Kavanaugh on the United States Supreme Court and supporting right-wing commandments generally.
Rather than shrink from the reference, I embrace the fact that I AM a proud member of this “angry liberal mob.”
I am a proud member of the angry mob that resists the increasing fascism encouraged, facilitated, and organized by the Trumpian Party.
I am a proud member of the angry mob that opposes destroying long-term successful alliances around the world and treaty agreements while cozying up to brutal dictatorial tyrants like M.B.S., Kim, and Putin.
I am a proud member of the angry mob that demonstrates against the confirmation of perjurers and accused sexual abusers to judicial and other appointments, and Cabinet members with obvious conflicts of interest, lack of qualifications, and corrupt actions.
I am a proud member of the angry mob that fights against the Trumpian Party’s tax scam that gives tax breaks to the rich and to corporations and mere crumbs to the rest of us, while significantly raising the national deficit, which the Trumpian Party is attempting to “fix” by reducing public entitlement programs.
I am a proud member of the angry mob that challenges plans and policies that take away health care from people without substituting benefits with something more equitable.
I am a proud member of the angry mob that battles against an administration and political party that actively inhibits the passage of gun safety measures while simultaneously connecting itself to the N.R.A.
I am a proud member of the angry mob that opposes blatantly oppressive and inhumane immigration policies that place children in cages, separate and incarcerate adults, force people back to countries where their lives remain at risk and dehumanize and restrict people based on their religious, ethnic, and economic backgrounds.
I am a proud member of the angry mob that fights against Trumpian Party calls and policies that increasingly privatize public education, corrections facilities, public lands, government and other services by placing them in the hands of for-profit corporations.
I am a proud member of the angry mob that resists conservatives’ denial of global climate change as a result of human activity and loosens environmental protections meant to protect the air, water, and soil.
I am a proud member of the angry mob that dissents against governmental insistence on continuing our nation’s addiction to fossil fuels while failing substantially to increase our investment in clean renewable energy sources.
I am a proud member of the angry mob that combats any person, including the President of the United States, who dehumanizes and steps over the bodies of Muslims, Jews, women, black people, Latinx people, Asian people, Native peoples, activists in Black Lives Matter since they did not matter to them, people with disabilities, bodies that may not fulfill rigid social standards of female beauty, prisoners of war, Gold Star parents, women who have the audacity to fight to control their own bodies and their own lives, transgender people of all ages, couples in same-sex relationships, invading “alien” immigrants, dreamers, in fact, anyone and everyone who disagree or criticize right-wing dictums.
I am a proud member of the angry mob that contradicts this president’s appeals to compulsory markers of hypermasculinity, for example, to rugged individualism (“I alone can fit it!), appeals to extreme nationalism to defend our country from the so-called invading hoards, objectification of the female body both in language and in alleged deed, and to base notions of tribalism of us versus all “others.”
I am a proud member of the angry mob that calls out the President for his constant dangerous attacks on the free press.
I am a proud member of the angry mob that opposes the President and his Party, which actively suppress peoples’ right to vote by employing deceptive and blatantly abusive methods.
I am a proud member of the angry mob in calling out the President of the United States and his enablers in leadership positions for their failure to provide moral direction in a severely traumatized nation.
I am a proud member of the angry mob that works to unseat a President who is unstable in character, ignorant in mind, unfocused and abusive in action, self-serving and self-obsessed, and dangerous to the country and to the world community.
So, yes indeed, I stand up to hatred when I perceive it, for when I do not, I collude in the oppression.
And while the political right refers to me and other who oppose their words, actions, and policies as constituting an “angry liberal mob,” I prefer the term “progressive resistance movement,” one that promotes policies not to “Make America Great Again,” but, instead, to “Make the United States Better Than It Has Been.”
