I Do My Work BeCAUSE

Very few people can build a business that grows sustainably over time weathers the ups and downs of market variability.

The video for this article comes from the show Business Rockstars hosted by Ken Rutkowski. Business Rockstars is a daily radio show that interviews entrepreneurs of all different industries and backgrounds.

Purpose is one the most galvanizing aspects of an organization. Simon Sinek delivered one of the most compelling and successful TED Talks of all time on the topic of determining a company’s why. Dozens and dozens of books come out each year imploring business leaders and entrepreneurs to make a statement with how they work.

So, why is this process so difficult? The desired outcome seems quite clear.

My experience as a coach, consultant, and trainer for over 15 years tells me that this is one of those “easier said than done” activities. Just about everyone knows that defining the purpose is a business imperative. Nearly every agrees that it’s more enjoyable to do business in a manner that connects to something larger. And almost everyone I’ve ever talked to about this subject thinks that clarifying purpose will eventually make succeeding in business easier to accomplish.

So, why again don’t people jump to do it?

The simple truth, I believe, is that it’s possible to do business without it. And not only that, it’s even possible to succeed without doing so, if the market conditions are right. The question then becomes, “How committed is a business leader to having a business that goes from good to great?” That’s what we’re really talking about here.

Nearly anyone can open a business and drive some sales. Some people can hang in long enough to time the market right. Very few people can build a business that grows sustainably over time weathers the ups and downs of market variability.

Purpose allows this type of growth and success to occur. Purpose attracts the right people to your work. Purpose gives you fuel to do your work–even when you’re tired, discouraged, or frustrated. Purpose creates loyalty and endurance in relationships.

Think about your business for a moment. What is your commitment to going to the next level? Why do you want to do so?

Now, if you can answer those questions–What is the cause you want to associate to your business?
