This week Andy Grant is joined by four men from the private RMF Facebook group to discuss a recent article by Darnell Donerson called, I Don’t Understand Why Telling Someone To “Man Up” or “Grow A Pair” Is Bad.
As soon as I read that article I knew it was ripe a broader discussion on it because I had never heard a man talk positively about those terms, ‘man up’ and ‘grow a pair.’ I also want to commend Darnell for the courage to show up not knowing if others were going to agree or disagree with him. – Andy
“Man up (or grow a pair) simply means don’t quit!” ~Darnell Donerson
Hear a diverse group of men share their experiences being told to “man up.”
Topics Covered Include:
- The context of these words
- Toxic humanity vs. toxic masculinity
- Those words for a gay man
- Effort vs. feeling
- What a 12-year-old girl thinks about the article
- “Grow a pair of ovaries.”
- Political correctness

“The danger or offense in such phrases is that it implies whatever I’m doing is NOT being a man. That is the damaging aspect.” ~Andy Grant
