But on July 19 the Israeli Knesset passed a law declaring the country as the official nation-state of the Jewish People. Despite being largely symbolic, the law drew opposition worldwide, with even former members of the Israeli government saying that the declaration amounted to a form of ethnic cleansing by ignoring Palestinians and Israeli Arabs. The Knesset was split on the matter, too, with 62 voting in favor, 55 against, and 2 members of Israel’s highest legislative body abstaining. Although Israel is majority Jewish, 25.3 percent of residents are not, and many on social media say this new law leaves them high and dry. Last weekend, tens of thousands of Druze Israelis—a small but influential Arabic-speaking group—mounted a protest that was led by former Israeli army military officers, according to Fox News.
