I can’t say what compelled me to watch the video clip of John Oliver interviewing Edward Snowden this morning, but having seen it, I understand far more about my own apathetic stance on politics and how the future needs to be addressed realistically and yes, sometimes through the mediums of farce and satire.
That and I laughed, a lot.
Given that I haven’t paid nearly enough attention to governmental surveillance before now (or rather, that I have chosen to pull my head back in my shell when confronted with the enormity of the potential consequences of such Kafka-esque activity), I found it to be an inspiring interview.
Considering I had never heard Snowden speak before, I shouldn’t have been surprised (but was) at how mindfully his answers were given and how he handled every section of the interview with real grace and quiet humor.
The message of the significance of June 1st is well and truly received.
