I taught a 4th grader how to pop a paper lunch bag the other day.
I was playing drums for an elementary school musical, and there was a scene where this kid had to pop a paper lunch bag. And he didn’t know how to do it.
I’m serious.
Kids no longer know how to blow up and pop paper bags.
When I was in 4th grade, we knew how to pop some bags. So much so that Sister Francis would give a kid detention for doing it. She may have even inflicted bodily harm, but that’s a story for another time.
Anyway, after the rehearsal, I called the kid over and taught him how to do it. Of course, he got it right on the first try. It’s not such a difficult thing. He nailed it in both of his performances too.
And in a way, it’s good that kids don’t know how to pop bags. This highlights the fact that they’ve grown up in a world where we endeavor to spare trees by using reusable bags, or lunch boxes, or whatever. Reusable lunch containers also help to keep paper bags out of landfills or littering the streets.
So good work, everyone!
Change is possible. We’ve got a long way to go until we fix the damage that humans have done to the environment, but this shows at least a tiny bit of progress. It shows some of us are trying.
And I think even Sister Francis could get behind that.
