As I spend time reading The Atlantic, I am more firmly convinced this is the same path the Good Men Project is headed toward. We are becoming a publication willing to consider hard ideas and present them, not as five paragraph articles of dubious value but as long-form treatments on the Human condition.
Despite the anti-intellectual tone of the nation, I believe long-form media will be crucial in the years after the Trump Administration. Disinformation has become so prevalent and most media formats are so debased, people will clamor for quality writing, not the standard click-bait which is so common today, writing which shares the Human experience and promotes our connectedness, not our separation.
In the coming years, I think we should be trying to recruit writers from around the globe, who can give us a more diverse and inclusive perspective as global weather, migration and unfortunately military operations displace millions.
I also think we need to find new causes that we can support and back with our press and our efforts, bringing the idea of being Good Men and Women into a future we want to promote and see being built through our efforts.
What does this look like? Not sure yet, but events such as the hurricane in Puerto Rico show me, governments are going to become less effective in the future as they collapse under their own bureaucracy. If we want to survive in this future, we will have to localize, stabilize, and optimize our opportunities without the support of the federal government.
Many of the Good Men Project’s initiatives are already beginning to address some of these issues (politics, intersectionality, racism, disposability of men, disaffection of boys, masculinity, loneliness, family dynamics) but we still have so many other ideas out there that will need addressing.
Now and in the future, the quality of our work will have the potential to uplift and affect the minds of people seeking an understanding our current world is working to erase.
Yes, there are other media forms out there and we should partake of them. But underneath them all, quality writing and thought should be their foundation.
Take heart writers, our time has not past. What comes next may be the most crucial time writing has ever seen in Human history. We need to write like the future depends on it, because in my estimation, it will.
If you are a writer interested in social justice, economic parity, cultural transformation, media representation, prison reform, quality of life for youth, the challenges of dismantling patriarchy, I want you to consider writing for the Good Men Project. Look at the GoodMenProject.com for recent Calls for Submission [and here] for potential topics and writing challenges to present your ideas and craft.
Thank you and good luck in your writing endeavors.
