Jules Woodson says in 1998 when she was 17, Andy Savage (now 42) offered to drive her home from a church event late at night but instead took her to a secluded area and told her to perform oral sex on him. A few minutes later, he begged her not to tell anyone, but she ended up confiding in an associate pastor at their Texas church, who assigned some of the blame to her. Savage has since become a public figure, and when he spoke about the sexual assault at his megachurch in vague terms a few weeks ago, he received a standing ovation. The backlash to that support and to his defense of what occurred (he said in a radio interview there was a “flirtatious environment” at the Texas church in 1998) made his current church reconsider its course of action. After some lag time, it placed Savage on a leave of absence, and the publishing company Bethany House also canceled his upcoming book, The Ridiculously Good Marriage.” Over the last seven days, “Andy Savage” has a 16 percent positive score on Twitter. –Alex Shultz
