March for Our Lives — Donald Trump MIA Again!

On Saturday, March 24, 2018, students from across the nation descended on Washington D.C. for “March For Our Lives” to advocate tighter gun control and sensible regulations that will help protect America from future mass shootings.

I can’t help but muse if President Trump was wondering how high he should tee up his golf ball on the par 3 at Trump International golf club, while in Washington teenager Samantha Fuentes speaking before a crowd of hundreds of thousands of student activists threw up. Seconds later, this remarkable student who had been wounded in the Parkland shooting, her composure regained, bravely said, “I just threw up on national television and it feels great!”

What a personally defining moment as she continued her speech and concluded by asking everyone to sing Happy Birthday to one of the fallen youngsters from the February 14th massacre at Marjorie Stoneham Douglas High School, Nicholas Dworet.

Her courage in what could have been an embarrassing life-haunting moment was transformed into both a life-affirming action and a sign of how strong and dedicated the student protesters are.

Donald Trump is spending the weekend at his Florida home Mar-a-Lago. The allegedly “most powerful man in the free world” might have better served the youth of our nation by remaining in Washington, holding a press conference, complimenting the students for standing up for their beliefs and addressing the nation about the gun violence epidemic that plagues our country.

Instead, White House deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters issued a statement saying, in part:

“We applaud the many courageous young Americans exercising their First Amendment rights today. Keeping our children safe is a top priority of the President’s, which is why he urged Congress to pass the Fix NICS and STOP School Violence Acts and signed them into law…”

A simple personal message of support, even delivered via social media, by our Commander-in-Chief would have been more authentic, well-received, appropriate and reassuring.

The march was not the culmination, but rather the dawn of a new age of political awareness and action by young people who will either be eligible to vote in November or in the years to come. They will make a difference. They will prevail.

What about you? Are you willing to sit on your butt as more Americans are slaughtered by gun violence when there are solutions? If not, then it’s time to take a stand – if you don’t you are part of the problem not the solution no matter how concerned you are!

Today’s a good day to commit to work towards eliminating tragic unnecessary loss of life. Why not start right now? Contact your elected officials. They want to hear from you.

This is the government website, created for all citizens to exercise their right to be heard.
