Lynch, formerly of the Seattle Seahawks, is back in the NFL after taking the 2016 season off. He made headlines in Oakland’s first preseason game—in which he didn’t even play—for sitting during the national anthem, and continued that trend during the team’s second preseason contest over the weekend. When a reporter tried to ask the famously media-abrasive running back for an explanation, he answered with an intentionally nonsensical response. But according to Raiders Coach Jack Del Rio, Lynch said he’s been sitting during the anthem for his entire career. Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett also sat during the anthem over the weekend, and teammate Justin Britt, who’s white, put his hand on Bennett’s shoulder as a sign of solidarity. The anthem protest became a big story last year when then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick chose to take a knee in recognition of oppressed people of color in the U.S. He’s now a free agent, which many feel is because of his outspoken stance rather than his playing ability. Lynch already has a roster spot locked down, but he’s not doing too hot on Social: Over the last seven days, “Marshawn Lynch + National Anthem” has an 18 percent positive score. –Alex Shultz
