The spotlight panel included the first official film footage from the all-new animated Justice League Dark, and an enthralling discussion led actors Matt Ryan (John Constantine) and Jason O’Mara (Batman) alongside the film-making trio of producer James Tucker, director Jay Oliva and character designer Phil Bourassa. I have been a HUGE fan of WB Home Entertainment Titles since the original runs of Pre New 52 Justice League / Unlimited seriers to, Batman Superman Apocalypse, Wonder Woman, Justice League War & Justice League : Flashpoint Paradox. Young Justice is my boys all time favorite series. So to meet the talent behind our favorite animated shows was quite a treat!
There are must see exclusive interviews with the principals below. I asked for a little background on why they chose to do Justice League Dark-
“For me its another way to introduce other great DC characters to a general audience.” says Producer James Tucker “They haven’t been on our TV shows much or our DVD’s much, Justice League Dark let’s us get away from our usual Justice League line up and our Batman line up”
Check his enlightening interview below:
Justice League Dark introduces Constantine to the DCU animated realm, as well as his pals Zatanna, Deadman & Swamp Thing fighting alongside Batman in cases involving, Magic & the Supernatural, where the main Justice League is out of their depth.
I spoke with fan favorite Matt Ryan who played, rather IS John Constantine on the CW, NBC and now voices John in this new animated universe. He was hilariously in character at first and very forthcoming and humble about his mutual love of his portrayal by us fans.
“When asked, What made you want to come back?” Matt replied, “The money!” (laughter) “No seriously, he’s one of the greatest characters of the 20th Century! I loved playing him on the [NBC] show and Arrow on the CW and then to get to do him in this medium and this context is a great thing. To have him interact with Zatanna and Batman and Swamp Thing all of which he’s had various relationships with, that was such a great thing to explore.”
He’s the coolest. He comics, Hard. “I had to stop binge reading Hellblazer and falling to sleep! You don’t wan’t that in your head..”
And yes. He still has that badass trench coat and the sweet custom gold engraved lighter! You’ve GOT to hear the story of how he obtained them! :
Director Jay Olivia has been wanting to make a Vertigo film for a while, and Justice League Dark will satisfy Vertigo fans, however, Jay had some great feedback for us about the serious impact of piracy and keeps shows from being produced.
“As fans, if the sales of this [JLD] are good, you’re gonna see more of it. For example Wonder Woman The Animated Film by Warren Montgomery, was probably my favorite one that we’ve done, was the top pirated movie of that year. The Executives see the numbers and they pass on Wonder Woman because Wonder Woman “doesn’t sell”. Eventhough it’s one of our best ones, it’s sold really well over the years, but they look at the numbers it cripples us, and we were planing to make sequels. So as fans please support the things you love because we do this for you guys! These films are for the niche audiences for you guys, WE love these characters too, that’s why we pay attention to getting it right!”
No such thing as a free lunch Geek Nation. Go buy a copy of Wonder Woman and fight for what you wan’t, the studios do listen. Jay said, “The huge groundswell of support for Young Justice came late in the season and it was canceled. If that much on line support happened sooner in the year? Young Justice would still be on the air.”
Go watch Jay’s Interview:
Jason O’ Mara has been the voice of the Warner Home Entertainment New 52 Animated Batman for years. He’s a gifted vocal actor with great range and he’s also in the role of the new Director of SHIELD Inhuman Agent Jeffery Mace.
“I’m blowing peoples minds on Twitter that Batman is Director of SHIELD!” says Jason. “In this new team Batman in spite of all he’s seen is still a skeptic about magic, safe to say by the end. He’s a believer!” He’s also very clear about what makes “his” Batman unique. “This Batman is different, this is the Batman who had this strange night with Talia that produced a son, Damien trained by Ras’ Al Ghul to be an assassin. He’s the Batman that put Damien in with the Teen Titans, a bit of a boarding school. He’s helping Damien grow beyond his upbringing, who still has alot of his grandfather and his mother in him. This Batman is special to me because I can bring in my experiences as a father.”
See what he has to say about his role and his thoughts on how he and Kevin Conway differ in approaching voice acting The Dark Knight below:
