When Justice Antonin Scalia passed away in 2016, McConnell led Republicans in refusing even to consider then-President Barack Obama’s replacement pick. McConnell said that American voters should have a chance to be heard at the polls during the 2016 general election, but his tune has changed this year. When Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement on June 27, McConnell called for a new justice to be sworn in before November’s midterm elections. The partisan flip-flop has not gone over well online, with 79 percent of social media users holding negative opinions about McConnell’s Supreme Court maneuver. McConnell does not seem to care, though. “The last time I looked, there’s no presidential election this year,” McConnell told Fox News anchor Shannon Bream last Thursday. McConnell says he is not a hypocrite and is gearing up for a fight with congressional Democrats. Hypocrite or not, social media has no shortage of disdain for McConnell. –Hugo Guzman
