Meet the Skrulls

“SKRULL [ ‘skrel ] noun

A member of an alien people whose empire once spanned the Andromeda Galaxy. Unstable molecules in their bodies allow them to take any shape. The slow collapse of their empire was hastened by a failed invasion of the planet Earth.”

From Meet The Skrulls #1

The last of the Skrulls are on earth and are trying to stop something called Project Blossom; something secretive that’s supposed to be able to tell S.H.I.E.L.D. and, with the appearance of Iron Man in this comic, probably the Avengers, who the Skrulls are so the final ones can be eliminated.

This is a five-issue series and when I first saw the cover, I knew I had to get it. With a partial Captain America, Wolverine, The Thing, Spider-Man and Iron Man on the cover drawn by legendary (and one of my favorite) artists, Skottie Young, the variant cover is amazing.

The story centers around the Warner “family”. They’re four Skrulls shape-shifting into a family whose sole purpose is to infiltrate the people working on Project Blossom so they can stay hidden and try to re-populate so they can take over the planet.

If you’ve seen the movie Captain Marvel or at least the trailers, you know that Captain Marvel fights a Skrull taking the shape of an old woman on a train.

With the release of the Captain Marvel Movie and two new Captain Marvel comic book series out in the last month, this seemed like a perfect time for Marvel to release this series.

Early in issue #1, we find that the Warner’s have one rule at the dinner table. They take their real, Skrull forms as they eat. We also learn, after youngest daughter, Alice turns into a butterfly after getting teased by girls on a field trip, that no shape-shifting other than their human forms are allowed outside the house.

As issue 1 comes to a close, Mr. Warner is getting a briefing from his boss on what the next phase of the plan is and is warned that Project Blossom is ready to move into the next phase.

What happens next? I have no idea as I bought issue 1 Friday night and I’ll definitely be heading back to Comic Force, my local comic book store, to get issue #2 and add this short series to my pull list.

This is a fun, family-friendly comic that I fully recommend. This gets a full five purple goatees!
