In today’s environment, it can be daunting to think about healthcare costs. High deductible plans are all around and where there isn’t a high deductible plan you may find plans that require higher premiums and more out of pocket costs. This can cause stress and make people not want to think about going to the doctor simply because of the cost. Being a person who has faced some tough healthcare issues, I know first hand the importance of early interventions and preventive care. Often this is something that is instilled in women very early on as a regular part of life but it isn’t always instilled in men the same way.
Healthy habits start early. A lot of times we try to develop these habits after we are facing some healthcare scare or having seen someone else go through something. In a perfect world, we would all practice healthy habits regularly. Sadly, we know this world we’ve built for ourselves is far from perfect and when life gets in the way what we should do isn’t always what we actually do. In the real world, however, it would make sense that kids are taught very early to make their health a priority. Your health is your wealth. Without your health, no amount of money in the world will make life easy.
For men, there are a number of health issues that can cause challenges. One that comes to mind is prostate cancer. There are other issues like high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and so on. Many of these things are manageable with early intervention and medication or diet change. The issue with prostate cancer is one that has gained much attention through the press but sometimes men forget they really need to take this issue seriously. Prostate cancer has been highly treatable in a number of cases but like with many other types of cancers the earlier you get treatment the better your odds are of having a positive outcome.
To ensure your sons are taking their health seriously and you are instilling healthy habits, here are a few tips:
- Make sure to schedule your own annual checkup and take your son with you. If he sees you taking your health seriously, he’s more likely to do the same.
- Have your son create a list of questions for his pediatrician that may interest you when he goes
- Teach your son early to check himself so that he knows what feels normal in case anything changes in his prostate area
- Make sure to schedule regular well checkups for your children
- Subscribe to the Good Men Project and perhaps a magazine like Men’s Health so you are up to date on things that are happening in healthcare
Dads have a lot of influence on their kids when they choose to be intentional about parenting. Don’t waste this opportunity to set your child up for success in the future
