Now, he is being rewarded with a milestone: This week, McConnell became the longest-serving Republican leader in Senate history. McConnell, who has led Republicans for 11.5 years (and has overseen the majority party since 2015), surpassed former Sen. Bob Dole (R-Kan.) on Tuesday. Although that makes him tops among Republicans, McConnell still trails former Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and four other Democrats for longevity leading the Senate. The No. l spot overall is held by the late Mike Mansfield (D-Mont.), who clocked 16 years of service. McConnell was fierce in his opposition to President Obama and was the brains behind a huge spike in filibusters during Obama’s term. Most famously, he and fellow Republicans didn’t allow Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland to receive a hearing following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. After President Trump was elected, he nominated conservative Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court, and Gorsuch took Scalia’s spot. Over the last 90 days, the Twitter handle @SenateMajLdr has a 29 percent positive score on Twitter. That’s even lower than President Trump, whose handle registers a 37 percent positive score over the same time period. –Alex Shultz
