While the official and precise wording about what is or is not going on with Hillary Clinton’s emails has yet to be determined, I still don’t give a shit. I didn’t 600 days ago when we first started hearing about them, and I still don’t. Not when I was hoping for Rand Paul to be the Republican nominee, and not now when I have already turned in my early ballot casting my vote for her.
Should I? No. Do I? Even more no.
The main reason I don’t is pretty simple; it’s a non-starter. It is something that has been done by previous Secretaries of State and even Presidents. Was it a good idea? Not really but the precedent was set long before Hillary ever took the job. After 600 days of coverage, countless hearings an FBI probe absolutely nothing criminal has been uncovered. Yet here we are still talking about it, with a little over a week until the election.
The hypocrisy of this story has not been lost on me. The Bush administration lost 22 million emails; Colin Powell also used a private server as Secretary of State. Numerous Republican elected officials have done exactly the same thing. I didn’t care about those either. While it’s certainly questionable policy, and probably should not be done, it isn’t an issue that I am losing any sleep over.
I also recognize many, especially my Libertarian friends, who are calling for Clinton’s head, while also saying, Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning, Julian Assange and Edward Snowden are heroes. I guess they don’t recognize the irony. Really folks, are you concerned about classified emails or not?
What I am concerned about today, however, is that we have an FBI Director who is obviously playing politics. One who apparently felt the heat from GOP leaders over the lack of findings, and decided to casually drop innuendo today leading the media to the conclusion that the investigation was reopened.
Former Assistant Watergate Prosecutor, Nick Ackerman said “First, Director Comey acted totally inappropriately. He had no business writing to Congress about supposed new emails that neither he nor anyone in the FBI has ever reviewed. It is not the function of the FBI Director to be making public pronouncements about an investigation, never mind about an investigation based on evidence that he acknowledges may not be significant. The job of the FBI is simply to investigate and to provide the results of its investigation to the prosecutorial arm of the US Department of Justice. His job is not to give a running commentary about any investigation or his opinion about any investigation. This is particularly egregious since Secretary Clinton has no way to respond to what amounts to nebulous and speculative innuendo,”
Ackerman went on to say “Second, Donald Trump’s statement that this is bigger than Watergate is totally absurd. There is no evidence of any violation of law. For Trump to reach that conclusion based on a total lack of evidence is reminiscent of the innuendo spread by Joseph McCarthy in the early 1950s,”
So let’s be truthful here. You don’t care about the emails either, nobody does. Especially the GOP overlords on Capital Hill. They, like everybody else that has climbed aboard this runaway freight train hauling burning dumpsters known as the Trump campaign, are looking for justification to stay aboard. They need something to help them sleep tonight with the knowledge they are supporting the biggest disaster in American political history. So they swallow the vomit in their mouths and scream “EMAILS!”
Sadly, if Trump were to win, the email “scandal” would be over on November 9th. However, with a Clinton win, we will be subjected to this for a minimum of four more years. I mean we were just finally given the Ok by Trump a few weeks ago to drop the Obama birth certificate issue.
As I have said before, we had an opportunity in this election to have an adult discussion. One about policy, and ideas. A conversation that could have shaped the direction of this country for years to come, that all went out the window with the emergence of Donald J. Trump. For the last 18 months or so we have had nothing but something similar to a feces-slinging fight you can see at the local zoo’s monkey cage.
So please for the next week and a half, tell me how important this issue is. Continue to use it to explain your support of a misogynist, racist, xenophobic, bigot. Hold on to it like your favorite blanket and let it keep you warm and comforted. Swing it like a hammer at anyone who dares question, Trump. Use it to justify to your children, your god, and your ancestors how you could support this buffoon. Hold it up in the mirror when you brush your teeth, and act like it makes everything better.
Then when this FBI investigation leads to nothing, tell me again that the FBI is corrupt. Tell me again that what their findings say are meaningless. Just like you did in July, and pretty much every day for the last 600 days of this story.
